The formation of the Great Southwest Radio Theatre Project, LLC  (GSR) developed from the former Great Plains Radio Theatre Project (GPR) based in Sioux City , Iowa from the fall of 2006 to the end of 2011.  The concept of the GPR performance troupe was developed by Ralph Swain, former GPR president, and Paul Guggenheimer, former GPR vice-president. Ralph moved to Coolidge, Arizona as a permanent resident and Paul took a position with WESA-FM, a public radio station in Pittsburgh, PA. Soon after Ralph settled in Coolidge, he proceeded to establish the Great Southwest Radio Theatre Project, LLC (GSR), rounded up and auditioned some eager old-time radio enthusiasts and began public performances. GSR performs throughout Arizona's central valley region at RV parks, golf resorts, country clubs, and gated communities. There are currently 30 adult and child actors and singers associated with GSR.
